Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are generally in better cosmetic condition, but can have marks from their first journey. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

Buying for a climate that stays damp

Albany's weather comes straight off the Southern Ocean, and the drizzle that sets in over winter is persistent rather than dramatic. A container with a weeping door seal will not flood; it will slowly wet everything for months. That is why wool packs, seed, agricultural chemicals, tools and household goods belong in a cargo-worthy unit, checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot, or in new single-trip.

As-is units are the cheapest grade and they are not sold watertight. Around Albany they make sense for a narrow set of jobs: star pickets, rolls of ringlock, steel and offcuts that already live outdoors. For most other contents the price gap is not worth the risk in this climate, and we will tell you so rather than sell you the cheaper box.

Town lot or farm gate — choosing the size

In town, the steep and compact lots mostly suit a 10ft or 20ft, and there is no value in buying length you cannot get into the yard. On a farm the reverse is true: a single 40ft gives twice the floor of a 20ft for one delivery, provided the truck can get through the gate and swing into a straight line on firm ground. A high cube adds headroom for a boom spray, a quad bike on a stand or tall pallet racking.

If the farm will want two containers — say a chemical store and a workshop — order them at the same time so they can come down on a single truck. Sorting out the placement beforehand matters just as much: a container that has to be shifted later brings another truck all the way from the depot.

What the truck needs at a Albany address

Albany is built on and around granite hills, and the older streets that climb Mount Clarence and Mount Melville, or wind through Middleton Beach and Spencer Park, can be steep, narrow and lined with established gardens. A tilt-tray unloads by tipping its bed on a level, straight run, and a sloping street often will not give it one, so a crane truck is frequently the practical choice in town. The newer estates at McKail and Bayonet Head are gentler but fenced tightly. Out on the farms it is the ground that decides the day: the Great Southern winter is long, and gravel and clay tracks that are firm in February can stay soft well into spring. Farm gateways, cattle grids and the table drain at the road entrance are the usual pinch points, so photograph each of them along with the spot you have chosen.
