What to inspect before you buy a used container
A practical checklist for a used unit — roof, floor, seals, castings and the door test — plus what to ask for when you cannot inspect it yourself.
Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River are supplied from containers held at a Fremantle depot and trucked down past Bunbury. It is a long run by metro standards, so the best value comes from ordering the right container once and placing it where it can stay.

Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are generally in better cosmetic condition, but can have marks from their first journey. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.
Across Busselton the common uses are dry storage for wineries and vineyard contractors around Wilyabrup, Cowaramup and Wallcliffe, lock-ups for builders on the Vasse, Yalyalup and Dunsborough Lakes estates, furniture and linen stores for holiday-home owners between tenancies, and gear sheds for surf, dive and fishing businesses along Geographe Bay.
The Capes have a proper winter, and Geographe Bay air is salty all year. A container holding furniture, wine, cartons or anything valuable should be cargo-worthy, which is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot, or new single-trip. New single-trip is worth a look for holiday homes and wineries where the container is visible to guests and appearance counts.
As-is is the cheapest grade and is not sold watertight. It can be sensible for a vineyard's posts, wire and irrigation gear, or a builder's bricks and pavers. We tell you what is wrong with a particular as-is unit before quoting it, so there are no surprises.
A hire container on the Capes means two long runs from Fremantle, one each way. That can make sense for a clearly defined job such as a vintage, a renovation with a fixed end or an event, but it gets expensive if the hire keeps rolling on.
The straightforward test is to total the hire charges for the realistic period plus both truck movements, then compare it with buying and one delivery. For holiday-home owners and wineries who will use the container every year, buying almost always comes out ahead, and a cargo-worthy container holds a resale value if needs change.
For a holiday house in Dunsborough or on the Busselton foreshore, a 10ft or 20ft tucked beside the garage usually holds the owner's lock-up gear, the linen and the outdoor furniture that renters should not touch. A vineyard or a cellar-door business with a hardstand yard gets more for its money from a 40ft, which offers double the floor of a 20ft for a single trip down the highway. Builders on the Vasse and Yalyalup estates tend to want a 20ft that fits the front of the lot without blocking the slab.
Height is its own question. A high cube gives an extra foot of clearance, which matters for stacked barrels on pallets, tall shelving or a ride-on with a rollover frame. Buy the headroom only if the contents need it; otherwise a standard-height unit does the same job.
Every return visit to the Capes starts back at the Fremantle depot, so the biggest saving is not needing one. Order every container you will want together, cut back the peppermint or marri limbs over the approach, level the pad, and decide which way the doors should face before the truck is booked. If a second container is likely within the year, it is almost always cheaper to bring it on the same truck now.
Beyond that, the delivered figure reflects the distance — it grows as you move from Busselton to Dunsborough, Yallingup and south towards Margaret River — then the vehicle and the container size. A delivery with an open date can be matched to a truck already heading south, which usually costs less than a trip run for one address. Summer holiday traffic on Caves Road and the Bussell Highway is worth keeping in mind when you suggest dates. The actual date is confirmed at order, with container and delivery quoted as one figure.
Busselton itself is flat and low, with sandy ground and a high winter water table near the Vasse and the wetlands behind the coast, so a lawn or paddock that looks solid in summer can be soft for months after the rains begin. Dunsborough and the Yallingup hills bring sloping blocks and narrow driveways under peppermint trees. Around Margaret River many properties sit at the end of gravel tracks through karri, marri and jarrah, with low limbs and tight bends that suit a tilt-tray only if the driver can see a clear line. Holiday-home streets can be narrow and crowded in peak season. Photos taken from the road, along the drive and at the spot answer most questions, and marking the overhanging branches that will need trimming saves a second trip.
Common to every job wherever it is: something firm underneath, enough length to line up, and open air above the placement. Where that is in doubt we would rather look at photographs than guess. Full detail in how delivery is priced.
It depends on the grade and size and on whether the drop is in Busselton, Dunsborough or further south at Margaret River. Send the address and what you are storing, and we quote the container and delivery together.
Yes. Margaret River is on the same run from Fremantle, a bit further south. It falls under the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River rather than the City of Busselton, so check local rules with that shire.
Often, if the track is firm, wide enough and free of low branches. Photos of the approach and any tight bends help us decide between a tilt-tray and another vehicle.
Cargo-worthy and new single-trip units are wind and watertight. As-is units are not sold watertight. Heat and condensation are separate issues, so ventilation matters for sensitive contents.
Yes. Photos of the actual unit are available on request and sent before delivery. Inspection at the Fremantle depot can also be arranged.
