Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are generally in better cosmetic condition, but can have marks from their first journey. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

Short haul, so let the grade do the saving

When the delivery is a short hop from Fremantle, the container itself is most of the bill. That makes Rockingham a good place to be precise about grade. A cargo-worthy unit, checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot, is the right buy for household goods, furniture, tools and anything that must stay dry. As-is is cheaper again and is not sold watertight; it suits roof tiles, bricks, reinforcing mesh and plant that shrug off moisture.

New single-trip costs more but makes sense for two groups in particular: people planning to fit the container out, where a straight, clean shell saves time, and anyone in a Secret Harbour or Port Kennedy estate where the container will be visible and the neighbours are close.

Getting the size right on a retained block

On the dune estates, the size you want is usually decided by the flat pad you have, not by how much you need to store. Measure the level area between the retaining wall and the fence, leave room for the doors to open fully, and pick the container from that. A 20ft suits most of these lots; a 10ft suits the narrow ones. A 40ft is for industrial sites or larger rural lots out towards Karnup.

If the pad is not quite ready, finish it first. A truck that arrives to find a pile of sand where the container should go either leaves the unit in the wrong place or goes home, and either way you are paying for another truck movement to put it right.

The delivery realities in Rockingham

The older suburbs close to the Rockingham foreshore and Safety Bay are mostly flat, with reasonable frontages and room for a tilt-tray, though the sand on an undeveloped side yard can be soft. The growth estates inland — Baldivis, Wellard, Secret Harbour, Golden Bay — are a different job. Lots are small, often cut into the dunes and held up with limestone retaining walls, so the back yard may be a metre or more above or below the driveway.
