Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are generally in better cosmetic condition, but can have marks from their first journey. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

The grade decision on a windy, salty coast

Geraldton's afternoon southerlies carry salt and fine sand, and any container parked near the coast gets a steady sandblasting. For a fisher's gear shed that is fine — the steel just needs its paint maintained — but it is a reason not to start with a unit that has already lost its coating. For contents that must stay dry, such as outboard motors, electrics, paperwork or grain-handling spares, buy cargo-worthy, which is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot, or new single-trip.

One truck up the highway, not two

If a farm or fishing business needs two containers, order them together so they can share the same truck north. Separate orders mean separate hauls. The same goes for timing a second unit: if you are likely to want another within a season, bringing it now is usually cheaper than a second run later.

Match the size to the site as well. A 40ft on a farm with a clear approach gives the most space for one haul. A 20ft suits most house blocks and fishing yards. A 10ft costs more per square metre of floor but can be the only thing that fits beside a Beachlands house. A high cube suits tall stacks of cray pots or pallet racking.

Getting it onto your Geraldton block

Most of Geraldton is on coastal sand and limestone, and the northern and eastern growth suburbs are reasonably open, with room for a tilt-tray on a good number of blocks. Older streets around the town centre, Beachlands and Bluff Point are tighter, with carports, side fences and established trees narrowing the way through. On grain farms inland the ground is generally firm outside winter, but a harvested paddock is not a road, and the soft sand along some farm tracks catches heavy trucks. The summer southerly is the local wildcard: it can blow hard enough that the driver will not lift or tilt a container safely, so a crane placement might be rescheduled on a very windy afternoon. Photos of the entry, the approach and the placement spot, plus any overhead power lines, are the quickest way to settle the vehicle.
