What drives shipping container delivery costs
Why nobody can honestly publish a flat national delivery price, the six things that actually move the number, and how to get a delivered figure for your own address.
Bunbury, Australind, Eaton and Dalyellup are supplied from containers held at a Fremantle depot and trucked down the Forrest Highway. On a regional run like this, the smart money goes on getting the order right once — grade, size and placement — so nothing has to travel twice.

Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are generally in better cosmetic condition, but can have marks from their first journey. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.
Bunbury enquiries usually turn out to be about contractors' stores for shutdown and maintenance crews around the Picton and Kemerton industrial areas, farm storage on dairy and beef country around Harvey and Brunswick, tool lock-ups for builders on the Dalyellup, Millbridge and Treendale estates, and packing sheds and dry stores on the orchards around Donnybrook.
South West winters are long and wet compared with Perth, and a container that lets water in will be tested for months at a time. For anything that must stay dry — seed, fertiliser in bags, electrical gear, household goods — buy cargo-worthy, which is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot, or new single-trip.
As-is is the economical grade and is not sold watertight. On a farm near Harvey it can be exactly right for fencing gear, posts, steel and irrigation fittings that live outside anyway. We describe what is wrong with an as-is unit before it is quoted, so you can decide whether that particular fault matters for what you are storing.
Hire involves two truck movements — delivery and collection — and on a run of this length from Fremantle each one is a meaningful part of the bill. For a short, well-defined job such as a shutdown at Kemerton or a renovation with a firm finish date, hire can still come out ahead.
For anything open-ended, work it through in plain terms: total hire charges for the realistic period, plus both movements, against the purchase price and one delivery. On most South West jobs longer than a season, buying wins, and a sound cargo-worthy container keeps a resale value when you are done. Ask for both quotes together and the comparison is straightforward.
If a farm or a business needs more than one container, order them together. Two 20ft units can often share a single truck from Fremantle, whereas two separate orders mean two trips down the highway. The same logic applies to changing your mind about the spot: a truck that comes back to shift a container is a second movement you pay for.
Right-sizing matters as well. A 40ft gives the most floor space per delivery on an open rural block, but it needs a long straight approach. A 20ft is easier to place on estate lots in Eaton or Australind. A high cube is worth considering where tall pallets or machinery need headroom rather than extra length.
A delivered figure to the South West is built from the haul, the truck and the drop. The haul down the Forrest Highway is similar for Australind, Eaton and Bunbury itself, and grows for Capel, Boyanup, Donnybrook, Collie or the Ferguson Valley. The truck depends on the site: a tilt-tray costs less to run than a crane truck, and a 40ft calls for a larger vehicle than a 20ft. The drop is where the details matter — a soft paddock, a tight culvert or a low power line can change the vehicle, and with it the price.
The one variable you can pull in your favour is the date. If you tell us the delivery can happen any time within a reasonable window, it can travel with other work heading south rather than as a truck dedicated to one address, and that can take cost out. Shutdown crews with a fixed start should say so; farmers who just need it before winter can say that instead. We confirm the date at order and quote the container and delivery together.
The South West gives you almost every kind of ground in a short distance. Along the coast at Dalyellup, Binningup and the Bunbury beaches it is sand, fine when compacted and treacherous where it has been freshly disturbed. Inland towards Harvey, Brunswick and the Ferguson Valley the soils are heavier and hold water through winter, so a paddock that carries a ute in March may swallow a loaded truck in July. Estates around Australind and Eaton have the usual tight side setbacks and fenced back yards, which often push the container onto a driveway pad or bring in a crane truck. Industrial sites at Picton and Kemerton have hardstand but also site rules, so provide a contact with the order. If the only approach crosses a table drain or a culvert at the property entrance, photograph it; a soft or narrow crossing is the usual reason a delivery has to be re-planned.
Standard requirements sit on top of the local quirks — a surface that holds weight, an unobstructed approach, and no wires, limbs or awnings overhead. If you are unsure, photographs let us confirm the vehicle before quoting. The list is on the delivery page.
It depends on the size, the grade and how far from Bunbury itself the drop is, since Dalyellup and the Ferguson Valley are quite different runs. Give us the address and what you plan to store, and we quote one delivered figure.
Yes. All of the South West is supplied from the Fremantle depot by road. Tell us about the approach, especially if it is unsealed or crosses a culvert, so we can plan the right truck.
Yes. Most sites have sign-in and traffic rules, so include a site contact and any induction details with your order, and we pass them to the driver.
