Melbourne stock at West Melbourne, Altona, Laverton and Dandenong South

Melbourne is where the odd sizes tend to be standing on the ground. Depot stock sits at West Melbourne, Altona, Laverton and Dandenong South, and the quote covers the unit and the run to your address.

Why odd sizes show up on this side of the bay

West Melbourne, Altona, Laverton and Dandenong South are the four Port of Melbourne holdings named on this site. Depth is the practical point: a 10ft, a nominated colour in single-trip, or a high cube in cargo-worthy rather than new, is more often standing here than waiting on a vessel.

The day you get it is not a published timetable. It follows the pool in your size and grade, and the run, and it is confirmed when the order goes in. A fixed date — settlement, a site handover, a move — should be in the first message so the schedule works backwards from it.

There is no published Melbourne street address and no claim of a public counter at those depots. If you want to see the unit, ask and the photos go out before delivery, with no link to payment.

Laneways in the inner north, fill on the new estates

Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, Northcote, Richmond and much of the inner west are laneway country: one-car rear lanes, parked cars both sides, tram wires or low services over through roads. A tilt-tray wants roughly twenty metres of straight run to slide a 20ft off cleanly. Many of those rear lanes do not have it. A crane truck lifts over instead of sliding back, and that is the usual answer in those postcodes. It is a dearer vehicle, and the quote should say so before anyone is booked.

Tarneit, Wyndham Vale, Craigieburn, Clyde North and Officer are the reverse shape: wide, flat, freshly graded. The catch is soft fill after a wet week. Ground that carried a ute in February will not always carry a loaded truck in July, on a new estate or on a paddock.

Werribee and Lilydale are not the same 'metro' run. Out past the holding depots — Mornington Peninsula, Macedon Ranges, past Pakenham — the truck is simply on the road longer. Photographs of the lane, the gate and the spot are worth more than a measurement guessed from the street.

Jobs that keep coming out of Melbourne

Growth-corridor site boxes at Tarneit, Wyndham Vale, Craigieburn, Clyde North and Officer. Trade and tool storage through Dandenong South, Campbellfield and Truganina. Workshop and studio shells in the inner north. Dry storage for growers up past Yarra Glen. Fitout businesses along the western ring buying a shell rather than a watertight store.

For storage that must stay dry, cargo-worthy is the grade checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is is priced on its faults and is not sold watertight. Winter condensation is a separate issue from a leak: block the unit on its corner castings, keep the approach on the firmest line, and if the spot is soft and the date is loose, a dry week is cheaper than a bogged truck.

What to sort out on a Melbourne block before quoting

Inner-north rear lanes fail in ways a tape measure from the footpath misses. Fitzroy and Collingwood lanes often have a bin enclosure, a power pole guy-wire, or a neighbour's roller door that opens into the only straight bit. Brunswick and Northcote add parked cars that are not there at 10am on a Sunday photo and are there on a Tuesday delivery. If the lane is the route, photograph it on a weekday morning.

Growth estates at Tarneit, Wyndham Vale, Clyde North and Officer look easy until the fill is wet. July on a new lot is not February. If the slab is down and the rest is still loose fill, the truck should stay on the constructed driveway. Say that in the enquiry. A paddock past Yarra Glen has the same winter problem with better warning: you can usually see the low corner.

Werribee and Lilydale should not be described as 'Melbourne' on the form if you want a sharp cartage figure. Name the suburb. The holding might be Altona or Laverton for a west job and Dandenong South for a south-east job. West Melbourne is the other named holding. We pick from what is standing in the grade, not from a slogan about the nearest pin.

Tram wires matter on through roads even when the lane itself is clear. If the only approach crosses a wired street, say so. A crane lift under wires is a different plan from a lift in an open Richmond backyard. Photographs of the wire, the gate and the final pad beat a paragraph.

Melbourne questions

Where does a Melbourne container start?

From Port of Melbourne depots at West Melbourne, Altona, Laverton or Dandenong South, whichever is holding your size and grade. The road run is quoted with the container to your address.

Can a tilt-tray work in a Fitzroy or Brunswick rear lane?

Often no. Those lanes rarely give the straight run a tilt-tray needs to slide a 20ft off. A crane truck is the usual inner-north and inner-west answer, and the quote names that vehicle.

Does a Werribee drop cost the same cartage as Lilydale?

No single metro figure covers both. Distance from the holding depot and the vehicle the site needs are quoted against the address, not against the word Melbourne.

What should I send for a laneway quote?

Photos of the lane, the gate and the spot. They settle the vehicle before a truck is in the street.
