Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are generally in better cosmetic condition, but can have marks from their first journey. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

Grade for a rural block through the Wet and the Dry

A container on a rural block in the Top End sees months of hard sun and then a Wet of tropical downpours, often without any shelter around it. For anything that has to stay dry — cartons of packed fruit trays, fertiliser in bags, power tools, a generator or saddlery — buy cargo-worthy, which is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot, or new single-trip. Ventilation is worth thinking about for anything that can go mouldy, because humid air trapped inside a closed box sweats.

As-is is the cheaper grade and is not sold watertight. On a farm that can be perfectly sensible for irrigation fittings, fence droppers, star pickets, steel and old tyres. We describe the fault on an as-is unit before quoting, so you can judge whether it matters for what you plan to keep inside.

Size for the block — and for the track

On a rural block there is usually space for a 40ft, and it gives twice the floor of a 20ft for a single delivery. The limit is the approach: a longer container needs a longer truck, a wider gate and more room to turn, so a 20ft can be the right choice even on a big block if the track is tight. A high cube is worth it for tall shelving, stacked fruit bins or a tractor with a canopy.

Order everything you need at the same time so one truck can bring it. If you are building, think about where the container will be most useful once the house is finished, not just during construction; moving it later means paying for another delivery.

Getting a truck in around Humpty Doo

Most of the Litchfield rural area is acreage, which gives a tilt-tray room to swing, but the approach is the real test. Many blocks sit off a gravel road, then a driveway that crosses a table drain on a culvert, then a dirt track through scrub to the building site. In the Dry the ground is usually firm but can be deep in bulldust; in the Wet the same track can turn to mud and stay wet long after the rain stops, and a loaded truck will not get in without sinking. Gates on rural blocks are often narrower than they look once the posts are measured, and speargrass and scrub can hide stumps and soft spots. Measure the gate, photograph the culvert crossing and the track, and tell us whether any part of it holds water after rain. Batchelor, further south along the Stuart Highway, is on the same Berrimah run, though it sits outside Litchfield's boundary, so check local rules with the council that covers it.
