Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are generally in better cosmetic condition, but can have marks from their first journey. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

Match the grade to what is going inside

The cheapest way to overspend in Perth is to buy a better container than the contents need, and the second cheapest is to buy a worse one and lose what is inside it. Bagged cement, pavers, reticulation fittings, steel offcuts and a trailer-load of timber do not care about a drip, and for those an as-is unit is the value buy. As-is containers are not sold watertight, and we say what is wrong with one before it is quoted, so you know whether the fault matters for your load.

Winter is when that choice is tested. The cold fronts that roll in off the Indian Ocean between late autumn and spring bring rain sideways as well as down, and a tired door seal will let it through. Furniture, cartons of household goods, paperwork, bikes and anything with a motor belong in a cargo-worthy container, which is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. New single-trip is the pick when the container will sit in full view of the street or the neighbours, or when you intend to fit it out as a studio or workshop and want a clean start.

One container, one truck, one visit

A 20ft is the size most Perth suburban lots swallow without drama: it fits behind a side gate or along a back fence and a tilt-tray can usually place it. A 40ft doubles the floor area but needs roughly twice the length to line up, which rules it out on most battle-axe drives. If you are torn between one 40ft and two 20ft units, tell us at enquiry stage, because two 20s ordered together can often share a truck while two ordered separately cannot.

The same goes for positioning. Every time a truck comes back to shift a container a few metres, you pay for another movement. Clear the spot, trim the overhanging branch, move the boat trailer and confirm which way the doors should face before the delivery is booked, and the job is done in a single visit.

Getting it onto your Perth block

Perth has spent decades splitting its old quarter-acre blocks, so a lot of suburban deliveries now go down a long, single-width driveway to a battle-axe lot behind the front house. A tilt-tray needs a straight run and enough length behind it to tip the bed and let the container slide off, and a shared drive with a carport or a letterbox pier at the pinch point often does not give it that. A side-loader lifts the container off beside the truck and can set it down parallel to a fence, which suits these lots well. The coastal plain itself is sand: firm where it has been compacted and built on, loose and unforgiving on a vacant lot or a freshly cleared back corner, where a loaded truck can dig itself in. Up in Kalamunda, Gooseberry Hill, Darlington and Mundaring the problem changes to steep gravel drives, laterite that is slippery after winter rain, and marri and jarrah limbs hanging low over the approach. Street verges belong to the council, so if the only flat spot is on the verge, ask your council before you plan around it.
